We also include details of a selection of recommended gardens and plant nurseries in the North of England, which we feel are interesting to visit because of their unique setting or the variety of plants they have available.

- Planted Junk: Gardening with Recycled Containers by Adam Caplin – container gardening with a twist; a wonderful range of affordable and innovative containers to suit any style of garden.
- Old Farm Tools and Machinery by Percy W Blandford – lots of information and line drawings on the tools and machines that were used over the course of the farming year, from ploughing, sowing, to harvesting as well as on estate and stock management.
- Farm Tools and Techniques : A Pictorial History by Jonathan Brown – traces the techniques in unmechanised farming and the crafts that directly supported farming from the late C18th to the 1940’s. Over 100 photographs of farm workers, craftsmen and their tools in action.
- Salvage Style for the Garden By Marcianne Miller with Dana Irwin – uncover the hidden potential in things other people throw out and transform architectural salvage into beautiful garden projects.
- Gardens of Northumberland and the Borders by Susie White – an in depth look at 28 unique and varied gardens in Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, along with lots of stunning photographs by Simon Frazer. An absolute wealth of information on additional places to visit in the region.

- Chester’s Walled Garden, Chollerford, Northumberland
(www.chesterswalledgarden.co.uk) – a two acre 18th Century garden surrounded on three sides by sheltering woods and open to the south with views over the lovely Tyne valley. The nursery has a wide selection of herbs, wildflowers, roses, herbaceous plants and grasses.
- Houghall Gardens and Plant Centre, Shincliffe, Durham – the gardens, used as training grounds for horticultural students, provide a display of gardening styles from formal beds to a water garden, arboretum and woodland garden. The Plant Centre offers a range of both indoor and outdoor plants, which have been produced by the students, for sale at very reasonable prices.
- Birkheads Cottage Garden and Nursery, near Causey Arch, Sunniside, Gateshead (www. birkheadsnursery.co.uk) – a two acre hillside garden in beautiful countryside overlooking the Beamish valley. The nursery grows and sells plants which have proved themselves hardy enough to survive at 650ft above sea level and exposed in all directions.
- Helmsey Walled Garden, Helmsley, North Yorkshire
(www.helmsleywalledgarden.org.uk) - a five acre walled garden with many unusual varieties of flowers, vegetables and herbs, set against the backdrop of Helmsley Castle. Home to 54 varieties of Yorkshire Heritage apples, the British Clematis Society National Display Garden and 34 Victorian indoor vines.
